An allegedly knife-wielding man was fatally shot Tuesday by Huntington Park Police Department officers, and an investigation into the shooting was underway.
Officers were called at 12:26 a.m. Tuesday to the 3400 block of East Florence Avenue and Bissell Street, near Salt Lake Park, regarding a report of a person starting a fire, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.
They encountered a man, approximately 44 years old, who allegedly was armed with a knife.
“Officers issued multiple verbal commands instructing the individual to drop the weapon,” sheriff’s officials said. “When he failed to comply, officers deployed a Taser in an attempt to safely disarm him.”
The Taser appeared to be ineffective, and the “individual continued to pose an immediate threat,” prompting the shooting, according to the department.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Modica. A knife was recovered at the scene of the shooting, authorities said.
No officers were injured.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives will assist Huntington Park officers with the investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
