Three people standing outside the scene of a three-vehicle crash early Wednesday on Interstate 57 in Calumet Park were struck and killed by a fourth vehicle that went on to speed past them, leaving five others injured and shutting down all of the expressway’s northbound lanes.

Just after midnight, state troopers responded to the scene of the three-vehicle crash just south of 120th Street when the fourth vehicle hit three people outside one of the vehicles involved in the initial crash, according to the Illinois State Police.

The three were dead at the scene, according to the police, who said five others were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

All northbound lanes of I-57 remained shut down as of 6:40 a.m., with traffic being diverted to the 119th Street exit ramp.
