Idaho murderer Bryan Kohberger stared coldly at the loved ones of four students he stabbed dead, as they spoke to him directly for the first time.
Kohberger appeared emotionless and at times furrowed his brows and appeared tense in a hearing on his agreed-upon sentence sparing him of the death penalty.
‘Maddie was taken senselessly and brutally in a sudden act of evil,’ said Scott Laramie, the stepfather of victim Madison Mogen.
Kohberger’s sentencing hearing today was the first opportunity for the victims’ families to address Kohberger face-to-face.
Kohberger, 30, pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and a felony burglary charge to avoid capital punishment and instead spend the rest of his life in prison.
Families of the victims – University of Idaho seniors Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Mogen, 21; junior Xana Kernodle, 20; and freshman Ethan Chapin, 20 – have been divided on the the plea deal.
Chapin’s parents were satisfied with the plea agreement and did not attend Kohberger’s sentencing.
But the Goncalves family has been furious about the plea deal and lamented that the public may never know Kohberger’s motive and the answers to so many questions still remaining on the killings.
Even President Donald Trump on Monday weighed in on the high profile case, writing on his Truth Social platform that the judge should require Kohberger to ‘explain what happened’.
But 4th Judicial District Trial Court Administrator Sandra Barrios has made it clear, that the publish should not expect to hear Kohberger say anything.
‘Nine out of 10 times they don’t say anything,’ Barrios told the Idaho Statesman.
‘Everyone’s kind of waiting for him to make a statement, and he doesn’t have to.’
