In Concord, two suspected of riding in stolen vehicle involved in head-on crash

CONCORD — Two people suspected of traveling in a stolen car were arrested Monday following a head-on crash near the Kinney Bridge on Willow Pass Road, police said.

No major injures were reported in the wreck, which forced the closure of Willow Pass Road for about an hour.  Police Lt. Robert Garcia in a statement said the two were arrested on suspicion for their roles in obtaining the stolen cars and the actions that led to the crash.

It all started when Concord police tried to stop a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Alameda County, Garcia said. The driver refused to pull over, sped into a nearby neighborhood and eventually abandoned the car, Garcia said.

Witnesses told officers that the driver hopped into another vehicle that went north on Willow Pass Drive after turning off of Landana Drive. Garcia said that vehicle also was stolen.

The car sped northbound on Willow Pass Road and collided with a southbound vehicle as it approached state Highway 4, Garcia said.

The collision happened near the Kinney Bridge, a tight two-lane passage on Willow Pass Road that runs above the Concord Naval Weapons Station. Garcia said police were not pursuing the suspects in the stolen vehicle when it crashed.

Garcia said the wreck caused only minor injuries to those involved in it. He did not say how many people were in the other car or how many people were injured.
