SAN JOSE — In-N-Out Burger is eyeing a new San Jose restaurant that would replace an existing building in a retail center that is undergoing a fast makeover and adding fresh tenants.
The fast-food chain intends to open a restaurant at 2641 McKee Rd. near the interchange of Interstate 680 and McKee Road, documents filed with the city’s Planning Department show.
A hair salon and dry cleaner are currently located on the proposed development site.
The project consists of the construction of a new In-N-Out Burger with a drive-thru, planning documents state. Improvements would also include an outdoor patio with a detached canopy, a covered trash enclosure, a parking lot, and landscaping.
In-N-Out Burger was founded in 1948 as California’s first drive-thru restaurant with the opening of an eatery in Baldwin Park. In 2023, a new In-N-Out site in Idaho marked the chain’s 400th restaurant.
The restaurant would be within an East San Jose retail hub whose tenant base has evolved rapidly in recent years.
The center was jolted by the departure of a Fallas discount store and a Fitness USA, which for years had been key anchors in the retail hub.
The shopping center has rebounded by filling the empty buildings with merchants such as Sprouts Farmers Market and Burlington department store. Crunch Fitness also recently leased space in the shopping center.
