A huge fire has nearly destroyed the main stage of a Belgian dance music festival – just days before revellers arrived for the grand opening.

Nearly three-quarters of the spectacular set piece is said to have been burned down in Boom on Wednesday.

Around 400,000 ravers from across the globe were expected to attend the festival when it opens on Friday.

It is unclear whether there have been any injuries or if the festival will go ahead.

Images show huge plumes of smoke as people try to put out the blaze.

No guests were inside the festival grounds when the inferno erupted but around 1,000 staff members were said to be working at the site.

Dutch DJ Martin Garrix was due to headline the main stage on Friday night.

Festival organisers are yet to make a comment on the blaze and had only shared the weekend’s line-up minutes before.
