A 29-year-old Inglewood man was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison last week for shooting to death a homeless man in a stairwell of a parking structure at the Redondo Beach pier earlier this year, authorities said.
Alexis Martinez pleaded no contest to first degree murder in Torrance Superior Court on Aug. 27, according to Redondo Beach police and court records. Martinez was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on that date, where prosecutors would have presented some of the evidence against him and a judge would rule whether enough evidence existed to have him stand trial on the charge.
Redondo Beach police responded to the pier parking structure, in the 100 block of Torrance Boulevard, about 6:10 a.m., on Feb. 16, after a city Public Works employee found 43-year-old Teddy Campos unconscious in one of the stairwells, police Capt. Michael Martinez said at the time of Alexis Martinez’s March 6 arrest.
Alexis Martinez was identified as a suspect through information provided by the public on the department’s tip line as well as other, unspecified details during the investigation, police said.
Campos died of gunshot wounds to the head and neck, according to a Medical Examiner’s report.
A motive for the shooting was not disclosed by police and evidence was not presented during court proceedings leading up to Alexis Martinez’s no contest plea.
