(Bloomberg/Ian King and Shirin Ghaffary) — Intel Corp. Chief Technology and AI Officer Sachin Katti has left the company to take a role at OpenAI, where he’ll work on the startup’s infrastructure efforts.
Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan will take on Katti’s role, the chipmaker said Monday in a statement.
“AI remains one of Intel’s highest strategic priorities, and we are focused on executing our technology and product road map across emerging AI workloads,” the company said in the statement.
OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman posted on social media that Katti will join the company to work “on designing and building our compute infrastructure.”
Katti was promoted to lead artificial intelligence efforts at Intel earlier this year. The chipmaker has struggled to field products capable of competing with runaway market leader Nvidia Corp. OpenAI has become one of the most important buyers of the new type of computing gear through a string of multibillion-dollar deals. It’s also planning its own chips.
