I remember I did a write up on Meningitis early this year and I suggested it’s vaccine being introduced into the routine immunizations plan am so happy this have been done, am not insinuating my post led to its introduction though. Meningitis which occurs as a result of inflammation of the meninges which surround the brain and spinal cord and could lead to neck stiffness, seizures and if not immediately treated could lead to permanent damage to some organs like the ears and even the death of the child.
The reoccurring outbreak of Meningitis especially in the Northwestern part of the country made the states within this region the target population with 500,000 doses of the vaccine being sent there and more are espected once the vaccines arrive from Britain. To say I am confident that this campaign will help reduce the rate of Meningitis outbreak and also reduce the number of case patient of Meningitis that are presented is an understatement.Children are usually more affected during the outbreak which make theme the target population for the vaccine.
Meningitis which could be caused by bacteria or virus depending on the type is airborne and it’s transmission can be facilitated by poor ventilation and cramped living condition which the outbreak acute and could span for as long as 51 weeks which is almost a year. It’s burden on economy, migration, health and resources of the country is unimaginable.
The vaccine is given at 9 months on the thigh at various immunization centre. Please caregivers let’s endeavour to present our children for vaccination Meningitis could be deadly if not immediately or properly treated.
Visit the nearest immunization centre for more information.
