Is Sky’s Angel Reese returning to Unrivaled?

Is Angel Reese playing in Season 2 of Unrivaled? The upstart 3-on-3 league has announced 46 of its 48 players, but the Sky forward is not on the list.

As player announcements for Season 2 were expected to finish on Wednesday, Unrivaled GM Claire Duwelius issued the following statement:

“We knew you all were eager to learn who would be joining us this year and we wanted to give you as much information as possible ahead of more big news tomorrow in Philadelphia. A few of the players we’re in productive negotiations with just need a little extra time — and we’re all about giving our athletes the space to make big decisions on their own terms. That means we’ve still got two roster spots, and we can’t wait to share who will be filling them soon.”

Reese won Defensive Player of the Year for the league in its inaugural season and her Team Rose won the championship. This past season with the Sky, she spoke highly of the league and its impact on her development.

WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart founded Unrivaled last year to give elite players another opportunity to play stateside in the offseason instead of going overseas.

The league grew faster than expected in its first season, generating close to $30 million in revenue. That led to another round of investment and the league fast-tracking its own expansion.

Unrivaled added two teams for Season 2, Breeze and Hive Basketball Club, as well as a development pool of younger stars on rookie contracts. New additions to the league were headlined by Paige Bueckers and Kelsey Mitchell, and most players from the inaugural season are returning.

Other players who played in the inaugural season but have not been announced as returners include: Courtney Vandersloot, Jewell Loyd, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Kayla McBride — though Vandersloot and Samuelson are injured.

Reese also dealt with a recurring back injury this past WNBA season, sitting out the last several games for the Sky. She did not participate in exit interviews, where players typically share offseason plans.

Unrivaled begins its second season on Jan. 5 in Miami.
