Drivers blighted by the UK’s crumbling road network can let out a sigh of relief after the government announced a £92 billion improvement plan.

Potholes, never-ending road works and traffic delays are just some of the issues plaguing drivers up and down the country.

Now some respite is in the pipeline after the government gave a green light to more than 50 road and rail upgrades worth £92 billion of taxpayer money.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the investments are ‘long overdue’ and will ‘transform local communities and improve living standards across the country.’

The upgrades are set to make ‘every day journeys easier,’ Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said.

The improvements, including a Portishead to Bristol city centre rail line, road improvements along the M60, M62 and M66 corridors in Greater Manchester and redevelopment of the Euston station, will support over 42,000 new jobs, pave the way for 1.5 million new homes and give rail access to 50,000 people, the Department for Transport said.

Cash-strapped councils have battled the scourge of potholes for years, faced with a tough choice between services and improving roads while the number and size of cars keep rising.

Fixing all pothole-riddled roads across England and Wales was estimated to cost around £17 billion and take 12 years.

Councils were previously given £1.6 billion from the government to repair roads – with the caveat that they will have to show how many are filled.

The list of improvements includes key A-roads across the UK, with major roundabouts, junctions, bypasses and access routes named.

Drivers on the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route between M6 junction 40 and A1(M) J53 can soon travel on a dual carriageway after funding was confirmed.

In Greater Manchester, traffic capacity at the M60, M62 and M66 Simister Island intersection is set to be boosted.

In London, the outdated Gallows Corner bypass – originally designed as a temporary structure in the 1970s – is already being replaced as part of ongoing TfL works.

Meanwhile, at the cost of £27 million, passenger rail services will be reinstated between Portishead and Bristol by 2028 to make commuting faster – 60 years after the railway line closed.

‘We’re forging ahead with the vital new transport infrastructure Britain needs, and improving what we’ve already got, to deliver a new era of renewal and opportunity.’

Dozens of other upgrades are also being considered.

The motoring expert RAC welcomed the Spending Review money to maintain and improve local roads.

Simon Williams, RAC’s head of policy, said previously: ‘Local authorities now have a golden opportunity to end the cycle of merely filling potholes and instead begin to be much more proactive in their maintenance.’
