It was a musical happy 114th birthday on Saturday for the city of San Fernando

The City of San Fernando celebrated its 114th birthday on Saturday with performances by Mariachi Tesoro de San Fernando and Susie Hansen Latin Band.

The city, incorporated on Aug. 31, 1911, is an independent city surround by the city of Los Angeles. Historically, San Fernando was the first organized community, in 1874, in the San Fernando Valley. Mayro Mary Mendoza and other San Fernando Councilmembers attended the event. ci.san-fernando.ca.us/history

The crowd enjoyed the event’s pre-program by Mariachi Tesoro de San Fernando, advanced students in the city’s Mariachi Master Apprentice Program. The apprenticeship program got its start in 2000 through the advice and musicianship of Natividad “Nati” Cano, the founder of Mariachi Los Camperos. https://ci.san-fernando.ca.us/mmap/

The Susie Hansen Latin Band, a well-known group to residents in the San Fernando Valley and greater Los Angeles County, got the crowd dancing during their headliner concert. www.facebook.com/SusieHansenLatinBand/

The evening event included tours of the historic 1883 Casa de Lopez Adobe. The adobe has been, since 2021, the site where San Fernando residents and city government officials gather to acknowledge the city’s roots, and also growing it’s economy and community strength in the future.

If you missed the city’s event and would like to take a tour of the Casa de Lopez Adobe, tours are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27; 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25; 5 p.m. Dec. 2. 1100 Pico St., San Fernando. 818-898-1290. www.facebook.com/LopezAdobe/
