It’s bonkers Nigel Farage thinks he has more of a grip on what Brits want than Rishi, blasts David Davis

IT’S bonkers that Nigel Farage thinks he’s more in touch with Brits than Rishi Sunak, a senior Tory blasted today.

Sir David Davis, who is fighting his eleventh general election, insisted that Reform isn’t having major cut through with voters – and public school boy Mr Farage is in no place to attack the PM’s background.

The ex-Brexit Secretary also claimed that the Tories still have time to turn around dismal polling around.

On Sun show Never Mind The Ballots, Sir David blasted Mr Farage for calling Rishi Sunak out of touch.

Over the weekend the Reform boss argued that the PM couldn’t have understood the importance of D-Day ceremonies because he’s “utterly disconnected by class, by privilege, from how the ordinary folk in this country feel”.

Mr Farage went on to call Mr Sunak “unpatriotic” for leaving Normandy early last week to continue election campaigning.

And he sparked a row after claiming the PM doesn’t understand “our culture”.

Hitting out at the comments, Sir David said: “He’s just plum wrong!”

“The PM comes from a middle-class background, he went to a public school and became a very successful banker.

Nigel Farage went to a public school paid for by his parents and went on to become a city trader.

“Where is he getting this idea that somehow he’s got more of a grip on what the country wants than the PM?”

Sir David added: “It’s bonkers frankly!”

With 24 days to go until voters hit polling booths, Sir David told Political Editor Harry Cole that Mr Farage isn’t making waves on the doorstep.

Some pollsters have put Reform just two points behind the Tories.

And Mr Farage said his aim is to overtake the Conservatives and become the “official opposition” if Labour win a landslide on election night.

But the Tory candidate for Goole and Pocklington argued there’s a gap between survey results and what people are saying on doorsteps.

He said: “I’ve got a Tory constituency that’s mixed rural and urban.

“We’re not seeing any of what you’re seeing in the polls.

“I’ve seen almost no Reform activity, just a tiny tiny fraction.

“I’ve seen a lot of Tories who desperately want the Tory government back and there are some people who are yet to make up their mind.”

Sir David insisted that Brits will be “surprised” on election night, with the Conservatives doing better than expected.
