Jordan Woolery leads UCLA softball past San Diego State and into regional final

With one swing of the bat, Jordan Woolery gave the UCLA softball team all it needed.

The Bruins’ star cracked a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and pitcher Kaitlyn Terry took it from there in a 10-0 victory over San Diego State in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional at Easton Stadium on the Westwood campus.

With its second mercy-rule victory in as many games, UCLA (51-10) advances to the regional final Sunday, needing just one win in two games for the opportunity to move on to the NCAA Super Regional.

After Jessica Clements doubled and Savannah Pola reached base on a bunt to kick off the game, Woolery stepped in against Aztecs starter Cece Cellura and drove a 3-1 pitch just beyond the reach of center fielder Julie Holcomb and over the wall in left-center for the early 3-0 lead.

With that start, Terry (14-4) went to work. After relieving Taylor Tinsley and finishing the last two innings of the Bruins’ 9-1 regional-opening victory over UC Santa Barbara on Friday night, the sophomore left-hander gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out five Aztecs over six scoreless innings.

SDSU (38-18), which defeated Arizona State 3-2 on Friday, threatened in the third by loading the bases on a walk, single and two-out error, but Terry got Angie Yellen to ground to shortstop Kaniya Bragg for the fielder’s choice.

Woolery added to her day in the fifth with a one-out RBI triple to right to drive in Clements, who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored.

The Bruins tacked on six more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a Bragg two-run double, a Woolery sacrifice fly for her fifth RBI of the game and a two-run triple off the top of the wall in center by Megan Grant.

More to come on this story.
