For the second time this season, the Colorado School of Mines football program answered a loss with a win on the road.
Sophomore quarterback Joseph Capra threw three touchdown passes, including two to Nick Stone, and the Orediggers got back on track with a 24-14 win over South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D.
The Denver South product was an efficient 22-of-33 passing for 270 yards and the three scores, starting with a pair to Stone in the first quarter to open up a 14-7 lead. Capra’s third scoring throw — a 2-yarder to running back Braelon Tate with 3:21 left in the third quarter — gave the Orediggers a commanding 21-7 lead.
Preston Kyle tacked on a 32-yard field goal with 12:13 to go that essentially put the Hardrockers (2-5, 2-3 RMAC) away at O’Harra Stadium.
The Orediggers moved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in RMAC play a week after losing to Colorado Mesa in heartbreaking fashion at Marv Kay Stadium. Mines is now a perfect 3-0 away from Golden this season and 25-1 against South Dakota Mines all-time.
Junior receiver Aksel Richard had three catches for a career-high 104 yards in the win, while Tate totaled 132 yards of offense, including 20 carries for 87 yards on the ground.
The Mines defense held South Dakota to a season-low point total, with Jackson Zimmermann leading all Orediggers with six total tackles. Brady Zingelmann, Evan Bish, Sean Gilbert and Hall Edmonds combined for sacks, with Zingelmann’s a strip sack on the game’s final play.
