New information has surfaced about a boy, 1, who died under suspicious circumstances along with his mom, who died by suicide on the same June day on the Southwest Side.
On June 10 about 3 a.m. police officers responded to a call to assist paramedics in the 2400 block of West 80th Street where they found a 25-year-old woman unresponsive in the backyard of a home, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the Cook County medical examiner’s office later determined she died by suicide.
Meanwhile, Chicago firefighters noticed an open door at the home so they went inside, where they found Ellis Washington, 1, unresponsive on an air mattress in the living room, according to a police report.
An autopsy determined Ellis died of asphyxia, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled Ellis’ death a homicide.
Initially, police said they were conducting a death investigation.
