Sir Keir once again insisted “no Labour leader has ever done anything as serious” as expelling Corbyn from the party.

He says: “I’m not going to tell to the electorate, what do you think you’re doing?’

“I’m going to say to my party, we need to shake this up and change it.

“I thought it was right to fight the big battles from inside the cabinet.

“I wanted to remain (in the EU) but now we have left, there’s no going back.”

Sir Keir even went on to praise Boris Johnson for his support over Ukraine.

He said: “I thought that was important, Boris Johnson thought it was important.

“The only winner, if there was a split in our politics, would be Putin.

“It’s in the national interest that we speak with one voice on something as crucial as Ukraine.”

He says he’s told Volodymyr Zelensky there will be “no change in our support for Ukraine if there is a change of government.”

Sir Keri had previously dodged questions about whether he truly believed Corbyn would have made a “great” PM.

Last week he was repeatedly questioned on his support but insisted: “It wasn’t a question that really arose because I didn’t think we were going to win the election.”

Instead Sir Keir said that Mr Corbyn would have made a better PM than Boris Johnson.

Sir Keir was also quizzed over his claim that the Conservatives had built a “Jeremy Corbyn-style manifesto”.

He said the Tories would “load everything into the wheelbarrow” without explaining how to pay for it.

The Tories have criticised Starmer for flipflopping on his support for Corbyn and potentially lying to the public.

Ex-Tory cabinet minister Sir Simon Clarke has blasted: “This from the guy who backed two ‘actual’ Corbyn manifestos.

“The sheer nerve is unbelievable.”
