Kennedy Expressway construction to end in 3 months; lanes to reopen north of Addison

Construction should be completed next week on the north end of the outbound Kennedy Expressway, leaving just three months until the multiyear project is expected to wrap up by Thanksgiving.

The reopening of two closed lanes north of Addison Street next week will mark 70% completion of this year’s work on outbound Interstate 90/94, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

All lanes should fully reopen from Addison to Pulaski Road by 5 a.m. Aug. 29. The following ramps should also reopen that morning: outbound Kennedy to Kimball Avenue; Addison to outbound Kennedy; and outbound Kennedy to Pulaski/Irving Park Road.

Before those lanes reopen, some ramps will close for the next round of bridge repairs. The outbound ramp to Diversey Avenue will close Tuesday and reopen two weeks later. The Fullerton Avenue slip ramp to Western Avenue will also close for two weeks.

The state expects to wrap up the three-year Kennedy revamp in the next three months. The inbound lanes were completed in 2023 and express lanes were finished last construction season. The overall project had a $169 million price tag that includes rehabbing 36 bridges and the entire expressway from Ohio Street to the Edens junction.
