King Charles and Queen Camilla ended the first day of the Japanese Emperor and Empress’ visit with a large banquet filled with speeches, ice cream and expensive wines. The banquet held at Buckingham Palace also saw Charles reference Pokémon and Hello Kitty – two of Japan’s most famous pop culture exports.

After recalling the times he had been fly fishing with Emperor Naruhito, he joked: ‘I am only sorry to report that I haven’t had any better luck with more recent attempts at fishing – the Pokémon phrase “gotta catch ’em all” may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me it is, perhaps, aspirational!’

The three day visit will continue today, with the royals set to set out together again. Meanwhile, Princess Anne is still in hospital as she recovers from an injury at her Gloucestershire home. The 73-year-old will miss several engagements this week, including the state banquet and an overseas tour to Canada, which was due to start this weekend.
