LA, Long Beach ports to give quarterly pollution updates

The quarterly progress update on the ongoing efforts to reach zero-emissions operations at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will be presented at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington.

The meeting also will be live streamed on Zoom. Passcode is 326356. Participation will be in person only.

A progress update on the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan will be given at the meeting that will include information on the ports’ 2024 emissions inventories, as well as a status update on the clean truck program, technology advancements, and grants.

Limited free parking is available at the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade parking lot next to Banning’s Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water St., Wilmington.

Both ports adopted the Clean Air Action Plan in 2006 and it was updated in 2017, offering what was designed to be a comprehensive strategy to accelerate progress toward a zero-emissions future while also ensuring the ports’ competitive position economically.

According to port statistics, since 2005 port-related pollution emissions in the San Pedro Bay have dropped 90% for diesel particulate matter, 70% for nitrogen oxides, and 98% for sulfur oxides.

Targets for reducing greenhouse gases from port-related sources were introduced as part of the 2017 update plan, calling for the ports to reduce GHGs 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.
