Lake Tahoe boat capsizes; 6 dead, 2 missing

Six people were dead and two missing after a boat capsized in Lake Tahoe on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency calls around 5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, reported a 27-foot Chris-Craft overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park, at the lake’s southwest corner.

At the time, waves were reaching 8 feet, the El Dorado County sheriff’s office said.

A seasonal lifeguard and a ranger were able to get two people to shore, where they began resuscitation efforts, the sheriff’s report said.

It is believed that 10 people had been on board. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, six were confirmed dead, two had been taken to a hospital and two others were still missing.

Coast Guard and sheriff’s aircraft continued the search into the evening, and the sheriff’s dive team was to return to the area Sunday morning.

Witnesses told emergency responders that sudden north winds in the late afternoon whipped up the waves, creating 8- to 10-foot troughs.
