Lakers’ Luka Doncic sidelined for at least 1 week with finger, leg injuries

SACRAMENTO — Lakers star Luka Doncic will be sidelined for at least one week because of finger and leg injuries.

The team announced ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Sacramento Kings that Doncic had been diagnosed with a sprained left finger and a lower left leg contusion, and is expected to be reevaluated in about a week – signaling there isn’t a long-term concern with either injury.

Doncic’s absence comes during a period the Lakers are already without star forward LeBron James, who has been sidelined to start the season because of sciatica and isn’t expected to be reevaluated for at least another week.

The Lakers will play at least four games before Doncic is expected to be reevaluated: Sunday at the Kings, Monday vs. the Portland Trail Blazers, Wednesday at the Minnesota Timberwolves and Friday at the Memphis Grizzlies.

Doncic’s left middle finger was taped up early during Friday’s home win over the Timberwolves, later being taped up even more to cover his left thumb and wrist.

Doncic, who is leading the league in scoring with 46 points per game, is coming off a pair of outstanding performances to kick off the season: 49 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists against the Timberwolves on Friday, and 43 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and a pair of steals in the season-opening loss to the Golden State Warriors.
