The largest pharmacy chain in the US, CVS, is set to shutter 271 of its stores nationwide this year.
CVS stated in its annual report in February that it would close the locations as part of its ‘enterprise-wide restructuring plan intended to streamline and simplify the organization’.
A CVS spokesperson this week said that the company decided on the closures due to factors including ‘population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs’.
‘We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations,’ the spokesperson told Newsweek.

‘We’re closing locations strategically to better meet consumers’ health, wellness and pharmacy care needs – as announced more than three years ago – not in reaction to industry pressures.’
After the ‘realignment work’, 85% of Americans will still be within 10 miles of a CVS pharmacy, according to the spokesperson.
The company did not release a full list of locations on the chopping block.
But more than three dozen locations closing in 17 states and Washington, DC, have been identified by the website The Krazy Coupon Lady and news organizations.

CVS confirmed the hundreds of closures just weeks after another major American drug store chain, Rite-Aid, announced it is filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years and is cutting jobs. Rite-Aid has closed more than 800 locations since first filing for bankruptcy in October 2023, and has about 1,200 stores left in 15 states.
And late last year, the second-largest pharmacy chain in the US, Walgreens, announced that it will close 1,200 stores representing one-fourth of its locations in the country, by the end of 2027.
