Last-minute goal by Italy breaks hearts of San Pedro’s Croatians at Euro tournament watch party

San Pedro’s Croatian American Hall was once again filled with red-and-white-checkered shirts on Monday, June 24.

The Croatian community came out to cheer on their homeland team against Italy in the 2024 European Soccer Championships.

And, even though the beloved team battled to a 1-1 draw against Italy, the cevapcici — a grilled dish of beef, lamb or pork — was plentiful.

Italy stunned Croatia with a 98th-minute goal to tie the score advancing Italy and leaving Croatia with a slim chance of moving on in the tournament.

Croatia is the underdog in Group B for the Union of European Football Association, which includes Spain, Italy and Albania.

Spain has already won the group, and Italy’s draw over Croatia means the former team advances as runnerup.

The final group stage match was held at Germany’s Leipzig Stadium with a Pacific Standard showtime of noon. Watch parties earlier in June at at the Croatian American Hall were at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
