Leeds General Infirmary ‘goes into lockdown’ after suspicious package is found

A major hospital is reportedly in lockdown after a package containing a ‘suspicious substance’ was found.

Staff at Leeds General Infirmary found the package and reported it to West Yorkshire Police at 11am today.

Specialist police officers ‘in hazmat suits’ are on the ground as they try to identify the substance in the package, which has now been contained.

A cordon is in place around a car park near to the hospital and a green tent has been erected on hospital grounds.

Emergency crews have rushed to Leeds General Infirmary after hospital staff found a small package containing a 'suspicious substance'. West Yorkshire Police have sent in specialist officers to identify the substance, after being alerted to the package at 11.02am today, Wednesday, June 11. Fire engines have also been spotted at the hospital. The package has been contained on site. The police believe there is no wider risk to the public.

One local who visited Leeds General Infirmary during the lockdown told Metro: ‘The hospital was manic. Members of the public did not know what was going on.

‘All I saw was loads of emergency service vehicles. Staff in hazmat suits and a tent had been put up outside the ambulance entrance to accident and emergency.’

A significant emergency response is underway at the hospital, with two fire engines, two ambulance and a number of police officers at the scene.

A force spokesperson told Leeds Live: ‘At 11.02am today (Wednesday), police received a report of a small package containing a suspicious substance which had been opened by staff at Leeds General Infirmary.

‘Specialist officers have been deployed to the location to identify the substance, which has been contained on site. There is not believed to be any wider risk at present.’
