Legoland California trains kid astronauts for flights aboard new Galacticoaster

Aspiring young astronauts will design their own spaceships and train for intergalactic missions into the Lego Galaxy aboard the new outer space-themed indoor coasters coming to Legoland California and Legoland Florida in 2026.

The new Galacticoaster will debut March 6 as part of the new Lego Galaxy themed land at the Carlsbad theme park.

The first new roller coaster at Legoland California in more than two decades will take over the former Legoland Driving School attraction, which was relocated to another part of the park formerly occupied by the retired Fun Town Police and Fire Academy.

A standalone Galacticoaster debuting Feb. 26 at Legoland Florida will replace the 2004 Flight School coaster at the Winter Haven theme park.

The $90 million price tag for the twin projects at Legoland California and Legoland Florida marks the largest Legoland investment in the history of parent company Merlin Entertainments.

The first-of-their-kind indoor coasters built by ridemaker ART Engineering of Germany will each travel along 1,500-foot-long tracks enclosed inside 30,000-square foot “space port” buildings.

The galactic themed indoor launched roller coasters will send riders on an exploratory mission into the uncharted Lego Galaxy in custom Lego spacecraft where they will pass through cosmic scenes and meet other intergalactic travelers, according to the backstory for the ride.

The Lego Galaxy themed land in Carlsbad will be based on a popular Lego Space series of toys from the 1970s. Riders will “blast off” from Legoland Spaceport 885 — an homage to Lego Space Scooter building set 885.

Merlin Magic Making, the creative arm of the company, describes the new coasters as the “most technologically advanced” attractions at any Legoland park around the world.

Riders will digitally design their own custom spaceships while waiting in the Galacticoaster queue — choosing from a selection of tails, noses, wings and weapons.

RFID wristbands will activate touchscreen stations where riders can mix and match elements to create 625 different design combinations.

Video screens will show an animation of the selected panels and pieces snapping into place around the central four-seat pod just before the indoor coaster blasts off into space.

The twin Galacticoasters will be able to perform controlled rotations with the coaster cars spinning to face the display screens upon dispatch, according to Screamscape.

The Lego Galaxy themed land at Legoland California will feature the new indoor coaster along with a spinner-type ride with three cantilevered arms, alien spaceship children’s play structure, toddler play area, Lego brick building attraction, quick-service restaurant and retail shop.

Galacticoaster will join three other coasters at Legoland California – Dragon (1999), Technic (2001) and Coastersaurus (2004).

Merlin Entertainments has launched a nationwide competition where kids who build their own Lego spaceships can win a chance to be among the first to ride the Galacticoaster when Lego Galaxy opens at Legoland California.
