Letter: LA Metro responds to criticism

Baruch Feigenbaum’s Oct. 25 op-ed offers a distorted and inaccurate view of LA Metro and LA County revealing the bias of an East Coast commentator whose organization consistently rejects most of the realities underpinning public transportation.

Between now and 2028, Metro is expanding the countywide rail network alongside the addition of more Bus Rapid Transit. Why? Because the combination works for passengers.

In 2024, Metro recorded over 300 million boardings. Overall customer satisfaction has reached 87%, Violent incidents decreased 15.5% in 2024 and are at the lowest level in six years. Those numbers do not signal a system in collapse — they are clear indicators of resilience and recovery.

The author also suggests LA Metro Board of Directors require some background in transportation to be on the Board. That is interesting because he wrongly asserts that the Core Capacity and New Starts programs pay 80% of transit project costs. There is literally not a single project funded in Los Angeles – or the United States – through those programs where the Federal Government pays 80% of project costs. As in LA, and throughout the country, local agencies and taxpayers foot the majority of the bill—not Iowans.

LA County’s public transportation system is a worthwhile investment because it improves mobility, strengthens communities, reduces traffic congestion, lowers emissions and boosts economic growth. Efficient transit connects people to jobs, schools and healthcare, making LA more equitable and sustainable. Public transportation is not just about moving people – it’s about improving quality of life, creating opportunity and building a more resilient future.
