Library Lines: Contra Costa Career Online High School students graduate

The Contra Costa County Library system is celebrating the accomplishments of four new graduates from its Career Online High School (COHS) program. COHS is a self-paced, accredited online high school diploma program for adults 19 and older that’s offered for free through the library system to cardholders in Contra Costa County.

Library Lines: Contra Costa County to take part in National Library Week

In addition to a high school diploma, graduates receive a career certificate in fields including education, child care, food and hospitality, transportation services and more. After enrolling, students are paired with an academic coach, who offers ongoing guidance, evaluates performance and connects students with the necessary resources to finish the courses.

Students must complete the program within 18 months. The library system’s COHS program has graduated 17 students since 2016 and currently has 15 students in the program. For more information, visit the ccclib.org/cohs online or email cohs@library.cccounty.us.

Disability awareness: The library system is celebrating disability awareness in July. Enjoy programs with Bay Area Outreach and Recreation about disability sports and the Paralympics and an inclusive dance performance by Bronze Girl Productions. Summer Reading: If you have not yet begun your seasonal reading journey, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the Summer Reading program going on now through Aug. 3. Prizes are now available for pickup at any library branch.

NYT for free: The New York Times is now available for free through PressReader, a modern, digital platform that gives users the ability to browse, read and download more than 7,000 publications from more than 120 countries in 60 different languages.

Library calendar

Digital literacy classes: 3:30 p.m. July 1 at the Bay Point Library. This is a four-class series with eight hours of training in computer skills. Participants will be provided a free laptop and will learn how to create and use an email account, safely search the Internet, use Google Suite and more. Registration is required.

East Bay Regional Park District 90th anniversary celebration: 11 a.m. July 11 via Zoom. Learn more about the history, present and future of the East Bay Regional Park District as they celebrate their 90th year. Registration is required.

Wildlife cameras in the East Bay regional parks: 11 a.m. July 17 via Zoom. Learn about the Hundred Camera Grid Project, which captures images from wildlife cameras throughout the East Bay Regional Park District, from mountain lions to squirrels, coyotes to Steller’s Jays, and how you can be involved. Registration is required.

Make a mini magical garden: 2 p.m. July 31 at the Martinez Library. Make a miniature house and garden for a fairy or other tiny magical creature. We will have a large assortment of recycled items plus various natural elements for you to add to your mini magical sanctuary. Feel free to bring anything you’d like to add. This event is for ages 9 or older. Registration is required.
