Less than three weeks after a car crashed into the Loard’s Ice Cream shop in Moraga, the doors have reopened to customers.
On Oct. 30, a Tesla crashed through the storefront of Loard’s on Moraga Road, damaging the facade and resulting in only minor injuries to customers, according to local media outlet News24-680.
A GoFundMe was soon started to help raise money to fix the store.
According to a GoFundMe page that’s raised more than $15,000 to help pay for the reconstruction of the store, nobody was hurt. The shop began selling ice cream again last weekend.
“Although nobody was injured, thankfully, the damage has cost the family quite a lot,” wrote Alex McCarthy, organizing the fundraiser on behalf of Loard’s owner Claudina Ovenden. “We are asking the community to come together and help support the affected family during this unexpected and disheartening emergency. All proceeds will go directly towards the reconstruction and re-opening of this lovely business that has served the community for many years.”
Loard’s has been an East Bay institution for nearly a century. Russ Salyards opened his first Loard’s Ice Cream store on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland in 1950. The Orinda Theatre Square location has been open 72 years and maintains its old-school feel, with pink-and-white tile floors and pink vinyl booths.
The Moraga location recently celebrated its 12th birthday.
Details: Open Sunday through Thursday from 12 to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1480 Moraga Road in Moraga; www.loards.com.
