Longtime Bears nemesis Aaron Rodgers calls team’s upheaval ‘tough deal’ for QB Caleb Williams

The Bears’ owner would like a word about what the team is doing with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

No, not Virginia McCaskey.

Longtime Bears nemesis Aaron Rodgers, who famously screamed during a game that he owned them, raised concern Tuesday about changing play-callers on Williams halfway through his first season after the Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and replaced him with Thomas Brown.

“There’s been a lot of quarterbacks who have had rough starts to their career with multiple play-callers,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “There’s been a lot of guys who have figured it out over the years, but it doesn’t make it easy on a quarterback, for sure.”

Rodgers railed against impatience with coaches and players — funny, given that it’s widely theorized that he factored into the ouster of Jets coach Robert Saleh this season — and said he expects Williams ultimately to thrive.

“For a young player to come in like that and be drafted first overall with all the pressure, scrutiny and expectations, with the roster moves they made, and then you get rid of the guy calling the plays after nine games, that’s a tough deal for him,” Rodgers said. “He’s strong enough mentally to get through this.

“Chicago is a great sports town with great sports fans, but the consensus for all fans is, ‘If we’re not winning now, then everybody needs to get the hell out.’ There are [exceptions], but I would continue to preach patience.”

Of the 33 quarterbacks who have thrown at least 150 passes this season, Williams is 31st in completion percentage (60.5), 23rd in yardage (1,785), 21st in touchdown passes (nine), 12th in fewest interceptions (five) and 28th in passer rating (81.0).
