Longtime Sky scoring star Allie Quigley makes retirement official

NEW YORK — Sky great Allie Quigley, who last played in the WNBA in 2022, officially retired Tuesday. She called it an “Irish Goodbye,” as in slipping out of the party without saying a word.

Quigley, 38, grew up in Joliet and played for the Sky from 2013 through ’22. She was a three-time All-Star and a key piece of their 2021 championship season. She was the franchise’s all-time leading scorer until her wife, point guard Courtney Vandersloot, broke her record last month.

“I love knowing that I can look back on my career and say it was really, really good — but it was part of the beginning of something truly great,” Quigley wrote in a 2,000-word essay on The Players’ Tribune.

She said her decision to officially step away was rooted in her desire to focus on motherhood. She recently gave birth to her and Vandersloot’s first child.

Quigley fought hard to establish a career in the WNBA after the Storm drafted her in the second round out of DePaul in 2008. She got cut four times in her career before her tremendous run with the Sky.

She also played for the Mercury, Fever and San Antonio Silver Stars in her 14-year WNBA career in addition to playing in Turkey, Italy and Russia.
