Lawyers for convicted serial child killer Lucy Letby say they will unveil ‘new medical evidence’ next week as part of a bid to reopen her case.
The 35-year-old former nurse is currently serving 15 whole-life orders for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of seven others in her care at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Her legal team said they will disclose independent analysis by an international panel of 14 experts in neonatal care.
The panel is chaired by senior Tory MP Sir David Davis, who claims the findings will ‘clear’ Letby.
Davis has repeatedly called for a retrial for Letby, claiming he believed the ‘tabloid narrataive’ about her conviction until he was contacted by medics and academics.
The panel includes retired neonatologist Dr Shoo Lee, who was the top paediatrician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Canada for more than a decade, and founded the Canadian Neonatal Network of 27 hospitals and 16 universities.
Dr Lee appeared as a witness in Letby’s defence when she unsuccessfully tried to appeal her convictions in April 2024.
Letby’s barrister, Mark McDonald, has said new evidence ‘undermines’ the convictions
Neonatologists also gave evidence for the prosecution, including lead medical expert Dr Dewi Evans and Dr Sandie Bohin.
A number of academics and experts with no connection to the trial have weighed in on either side, although none have seen all the evidence.
Letby’s lawyers have said they will make a fresh bid to challenge her convictions on the grounds that the evidence given by Dr Evans was ‘not reliable’.
Her barrister, Mark McDonald, said he will ask the Court of Appeal to make the ‘exceptional but necessary decision’ to permit an application to reopen the case.
Dr Evans said their concerns are ‘unsubstantiated, unfounded, inaccurate’.
Findings from a public inquiry into events at the hospital are expected this autumn.
