After breaking the initial tackle in the middle of the field, Bradley-Bourbonnais receiver Lyzale Edmon spun and broke a second. Then he outran two Lincoln-Way West defenders and was just two yards from the end zone. The hard work was done. Or at least that’s what he thought.
“I didn’t see the other guy coming,” Edmon said.
The fifth defender finally brought Edmond down, but not before instinct took over and the senior stretched just enough to get the ball into the end zone: “I’m so glad I got in there and didn’t fumble.”
Edmon, a dynamic Pitt State recruit, scored three touchdowns in the Boilermakers’ 35-13 upset win against undefeated, No. 20 Lincoln-Way West on Friday in New Lenox.
“He’s been doing that all year,” Bradley-Bourbonnais coach Mike Kohl said. “He’s a really explosive kid and one of the best players we’ve had come through here. And he’s a great human. It’s fun to see good kids have success.”
Edmon had four catches for 167 yards. His second TD was a short catch followed by an 89-yard explosion down the sideline after a great block from a teammate. Edmon’s third score was a diving grab in the end zone to put the Boilermakers ahead 28-10 in the third quarter.
Kyren Edmon, Lyzale’s younger brother, had 11 carries for 104 yards and a 42-yard TD.
“It’s been special sharing this with him the last two seasons,” Lyzale Edmon said. “I’m sad that this is the last year.”
Bradley-Bourbonnais (7-1, 4-1 Southwest Valley Red) has enough talent and grit to keep the Edmon brothers’ last high school season together running for several more weeks.
Senior quarterback Ellis Johnson, a first-year starter, made all the right decisions against the Warriors. He plays with confidence and isn’t afraid to make daring passes.
“It’s amazing,” Kohl said. “Last year he sat and watched and observed. He’s had a phenomenal year and I’m so proud of him.”
Johnson was 11-for-19 for 219 yards with three TDs and no interceptions.
“I’ve been prepared for this for a long time,” Johnson said. “I’ve been relaxed and poised all season. I want my teammates to have confidence in me. And it makes it easy having guys to throw to like Lyzale Edmon and Rontez Smith.”
Lincoln-Way West (7-1, 4-1) scored on the second play of the game when quarterback Grant Tustin ripped off a 64-yard TD run. But Bradley-Bourbonnais scored the next three TDs.
“Bradley came out and had a great game plan and played excellent,” Warriors coach Luke Lokanc said. “Credit to them.”
South Dakota recruit Jahan Abubakar had 18 carries for 94 yards for Lincoln-Way West. Tustin was 9 of 18 for 103 yards.
Lincoln-Way West wraps up the regular season at Stagg.
The victory puts Bradley-Bourbonnais in the conversation as another contender in Class 6A. The Boilermakers close out the regular season at Andrew.
“That will be a tough game next week,” Johnson said. “But we are in a groove now, and I’m feeling good about the playoffs.”
Kind of a strange TD. LyZale Edmon breaks two tackles but then almost stops running…but he gets in and Bradley-Bourbonnais leads Lincoln-Way West 14-7, 2Q. pic.twitter.com/76IeSArhvF
