Magnitude 3.1 earthquake rattles Hollister area

HOLLISTER — A magnitude 3.1 earthquake rattled the Hollister area Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 9:23 p.m. about five miles south-southeast of the city in San Benito County, the USGS reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The USGS said the earthquake was felt as far away as Salinas in Monterey County.

The quake happened along the seismically active Calaveras Fault, which produced the magnitude 6.2 Morgan Hill quake in 1984 and the magnitude 5.9 Coyote Lake quake in 1979.
