Drivers were warned of severe disruption after a motorway near Leeds shut due to a police incident.

The M62 closed to traffic at about 10am on General Election voting day in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

National Highways warned motorists of the incident that shut all four lanes in both directions between junctions 29 and 30.

The incident is ongoing between J29 (Lofthouse Interchange/M1) and J30 (Rothwell).

Drivers were told to use the diversion routes eastbound and westbound.

There are delays of up to 30 minutes in the area, National Highways said.

Footage shows a police car stopped in front of a massive queue of traffic brought to a standstill on the major motorway, while the other lane was eerily empty.

Traffic is expected to clear by 12 noon today.

West Yorkshire Police was contacted for a comment.
