Changing plans worked for Chicagoan Nick Orlando arrowing a 13-point non-typical buck with his crossbow.
On Nov. 13, he hunted from his tree blind in Jo Daviess County. After a farmer began harvesting nearby, Orlando switched in the afternoon to brush near a harvested field. He put his folding hunting chair by the base of a fallen tree, then used his rattle bag occasionally.
“This monster came in from my left-hand side with his nose close to the ground, which gave me a perfect shot since I am right-handed,” Orlando emailed. “As he came closer and stopped within approximately 10 yards of my chair, I released my arrow.”
The buck was down 75 yards away.
BOTW, the celebration of bucks and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago outdoors and beyond, runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times.
