Alejandro Cuevas, 40, was arrested at 1 p.m. on Price Street in Beaumont, county jail records show. He was being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning in lieu of $1 million bail. He had not been charged as of Saturday.

Cuevas was an “associate” of the baby’s family, a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department news release said.

The investigation began on Aug. 23 with a report of a baby not breathing in the 2000 block of Whispering Bells Road in San Jacinto. The baby was taken to a hospital, where injuries were discovered, the release said.

The baby died on Aug. 29.

“It was determined the juvenile died as a result of homicidal violence,” said the release, which said the arrest followed an extensive investigation. The release did not reveal the cause of death or identify the baby’s gender.

The Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the baby.

The Sheriff’s Department asks anyone with information on the case to call 951-955-2777.
