Man arrested for planning ISIS attack at Michigan military base

A Michigan man is accused of plotting a mass shooting at a military base on behalf of the ISIS terrorist group.

Former Michigan Army National Guard member Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said, 19, allegedly targeted the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command facility at the Detroit Arsenal. According to the Justice Department, he was discharged last December.

Said, who was arrested Tuesday, purportedly told undercover FBI agents about his plans and they agreed to carry out the attack last month.

He allegedly provided armor-piercing ammunition, surveilled the base via drone, provided weapons training and gave directions on how to enter the base and targets.

Said was arrested the day of the planned attack after driving to a location near the base and launching a drone.

He was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and distributing information related to a destructive device.

Said faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

“The arrest of this former soldier is a sobering reminder of the importance of our counterintelligence efforts to identify and disrupt those who would seek to harm our nation,” said Brig. Gen. Rhett R. Cox, the commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command. “I commend the tireless work of our special agents and FBI partners who worked together to investigate and apprehend this individual.”
