The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed several charges this week against a man accused of recently attacking an Oakland police officer without warning.
District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson on Tuesday announced the charges against Lawrence Holley, 48, who was on probation at the time of the Friday afternoon attack near International Boulevard and 104th Avenue.
“If we are asking the police to protect us, then we must also protect them when they are the victim of an unprovoked assault.” said Jones Dickson in a statement accompanying her announcement. “Today, we have filed felony assault charges that reflect the outrageous nature and seriousness of the case.”
The charges include felony assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, as well as resisting a police officer and causing injury. Holley was being held Tuesday afternoon at the Santa Rita Jail on $150,000 bail.
The officer was taken to a hospital and later released, according to the Oakland Police Officers Association, which issued a statement over the weekend citing the incident as an example of the need for city leaders to hire more police officers. The union’s president, Huy Nguyen, suggested that “we need more cops, we need more equipment and we need a commitment from city leaders to make Oakland safe” to prevent similar incidents.
