Man charged in fake bomb threat near Rosemont Blue Line stop

A Bolingbrook man who falsely told a motorist there was a bomb in a van is facing felony charges after sparking an emergency response at the Rosemont Blue Line Tuesday, Rosemont police said.

The incident unfolded about 9:35 a.m. when a motorist was trying to park near a silver Sprinter van when 55-year-old Salvador Garcia — who was on top of the van — told him: “Don’t park there because there’s a bomb in this van,” said Rosemont Police Lt. Joe Balogh.

The driver told CTA staffers, who called 911.

Responding officers checked things out and decided to call a Chicago bomb squad technician, to be on the safe side.

Officers searched the van, which does not belong to the suspect, and didn’t see anything “crazy suspicious,” just a bunch of tools and broken windows, said the lieutenant.

Police determined there was no bomb and Garcia, of Bolingbrook, was arrested and charged with burglary to a motor vehicle, which is a felony, and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, Balogh said.

Additionally, Garcia was charged with theft from a Ford Mustang that was parked nearby, Balogh said.

Trains, which were bypassing the Rosemont station, 5801 N. River Road, earlier, were back on the move by about 11 a.m. after it was learned the threat was not legitimate, officials said.

Garcia was scheduled to appear for a detention hearing at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse.
