Man charged with killing woman who tried to stop party bus fight in Fuller Park, police say

A Calumet City man is charged in the fatal shooting a 40-year-old woman who attempted to de-escalate a fight he was having with his girlfriend early Saturday in Fuller Park on the South Side.

Demar King, 35, was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated fleeing and damaging more than $300 in property, as well as several misdemeanors and traffic citations, Chicago police said. King was scheduled to appear for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court building.

Around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, King was on a rented party bus with a large group of family and friends for a birthday celebration. As they drove around the city celebrating, King, who was one of the guests, began arguing with his girlfriend and her friend, according to police reports.

The fight escalated and spilled outside the bus in the 5400 block of South Shields Avenue where Odeal G. Curley, 40, tried to intervene and “calm the situation,” authorities said.

King then allegedly pulled a handgun and shot Curley in her leg. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 1:03 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A Sunday autopsy determined Curley died of a gunshot wound to her thigh, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Four 9 mm casings were found at the scene, and King and his girlfriend initially fled in a Chevy Traverse before he was arrested hours later while attempting to get away from officers in the 2000 block of South Union Avenue, police said.

He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
