SAN JOSE – A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a fight earlier this week at a San Jose light rail station that left another man in critical condition, authorities said.
Deputies found the victim — identified as a 42-year-old unhoused man — suffering from “significant head injuries” just before midnight Monday at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s Gish Light Rail Station, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said the victim “had been severely beaten.”
The victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday.
Detectives identified the suspect as Brandon Fryshaw, who was arrested within hours of the incident and booked into Santa Clara County jail, the sheriff’s office said.
Fryshaw is being held without bail at the Main Jail in San Jose, according to jail records.
Detectives believe Fryshaw may be connected to a separate assault involving another unhoused person at the St. James Light Rail Station in late September, the sheriff’s office said.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the agency does not have information to suggest the suspect was targeting unhoused residents and noted the suspect is also unhoused.
Anyone with information related to Monday’s incident can contact the sheriff’s office at 408-808-4500 or shf.sotips@shf.sccgov.org, or the anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
