Man dies after ‘heavy object falls on him’ at construction site in Kirkdale

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after an incident at an industrial site in Liverpool killed a worker.

Two men, one in their 50s and another in his 20s, were injured when a heavy object fell on them at a unit in the city’s Kirkdale area belonging to Shunfa Construction shortly before 9pm on Tuesday.

The older man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his colleague was taken to hospital where he remained on Friday.

The pair were unloading pieces of marble when the incident occurred, a worker who was near the site at the time told the Liverpool Echo.

Police and government health and safety investigators are looking into the incident, and the site remained cordoned off with officers present on Thursday night.

The suspects – two men aged 32 and 34 and a woman aged 58 – have been granted conditional bail.

Detective Inspector Natalie Charlesworth said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of this man as they continue to grieve at this tragic time.

‘A joint investigation into the circumstances of this incident continues between Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

‘We are still in the early stages of investigating this incident and we are determined to get answers about what happened.

‘If you have any information, please let us know as it could be vital to the ongoing investigation.’

A HSE spokesperson added: ‘We are supporting Merseyside Police with an investigation into this incident.’
