Man dies and major motorway closed after Tesla and motorcycle crash

The M2 has been closed in both directions following an early morning collision involving a Tesla and a Yamaha motorcycle.

At around 6.30am, the crash happened between Junction 4, Gillingham, and Junction 5 near Sittingbourne, close to Medway Services.

A major emergency response and the full closure of the motorway followed.

Due to the severity of the incident, Kent Police confirmed that, by 7.30am, the eastbound carriageway was also shut.

As officers created a large forensic cordon across the motorway, traffic was brought to a complete standstill in both directions.

No further details about the condition of the car’s occupants have been released at this stage.

A National Highways spokesperson said: ‘With emergency service crews working at the scene, National Highways Traffic Officers implemented traffic management to close the M2 to provide a safe working area.

‘At 7.30am, Kent Police advised that the eastbound carriageway also needed to be closed due to the nature of the incident.’

Drivers travelling between the Port of Dover and London are advised to divert via the M20.

Those heading through Medway should expect significant delays.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: ‘Kent Police was called at 6.33am on Sunday 4 December 2026 to reports of a collision between a car and a motorcycle at Junction 5 of the M2 Londonbound carriageway near Sittingbourne.

‘Officers attended alongside paramedics who treated the motorcyclist for serious injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene.

‘Officers have closed the junction while an investigation into the circumstances takes place. The coastbound carriageway was also closed at Junction 4, but re-opened at 11.26am.’
