An inmate at the downtown Denver jail died early Monday and police have arrested a fellow inmate on suspicion of murder, according to a news release.
Rick Roybal-Smith, 38, is being held while the Denver Police Department investigate him for first-degree murder charges.
At about 2:15 a.m., a Denver sheriff deputy found an unresponsive man in a housing unit at the Downtown Detention Center. The man had been assaulted and later died from his wounds, according to police. The victim and Roybal-Smith shared the housing unit, according to the news release.
The victim has not been publicly identified.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination of charges.
Roybal-Smith had initially been held on charges of careless driving resulting in an injury, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
