Man dies week after being hit by SUV when emerging from sewer at Southwest Side gas station

A man died a week after he was struck and critically hurt by an SUV while emerging from a sewer at a Southwest Side gas station.

Mohammed Shehayber, 54, was emerging from the sewer at the BP he owned at 6702 S. Pulaski Rd. about 1:40 p.m. July 16 when a 26-year-old woman behind the wheel of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee had just gotten gas, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

She ran over Shehayber as she pulled away from pump 6, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.

Paramedics took the Palos Hills man to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. He was initially listed in critical condition with fractures to his neck, clavicle, pelvis and arm, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 12:23 a.m. Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled.

Police said no citations have been issued, and there was no indication the driver was impaired.
