A 58-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday by Aurora police after pointing a gun at officers responding to a family disturbance, according to the police department.
Aurora officers responded to the family disturbance in the 15800 block of East Arkansas Drive at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the police department.
The shooting happened just 15 minutes later, police said.
When officers first arrived at the house, they learned that a husband and wife had been arguing, police said in the release. The couple separated, and the husband went into the garage.
Officers were speaking to the husband about the disturbance when he pulled a gun out of a toolbox, according to the release.
They gave the man “multiple directions” to drop the gun, but he pointed it at officers instead, police said. That’s when one officer, who has not been publicly identified, shot the husband.
Paramedics took the Aurora man to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said in a Sunday morning update.
He will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
No officers were injured, police said.
The officer who shot the husband was placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting and use of force, per department policy, police said.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
