The Lake County Indiana Sheriff’s Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting after a 38-year-old suspect who exited an apartment in Gary holding a 1-year-old boy in one hand and a gun in the other was fatally shot early Wednesday, authorities said.
At 9 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to an apartment in the 2200 block of Carolina Street to assist Gary police, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a statement.
The 38-year-old inside the apartment allegedly was holding at least two people hostage: the boy and a 35-year-old male relative. It wasn’t immediately clear if the boy was related to the suspect. Shots were fired inside the home, injuring the 35-year-old. He ran from the home and declined medical treatment.
The suspect refused to leave the apartment and fired multiple rounds at police, Martinez said.
A ramming tool on a Lake County Sheriff’s armored unit was used to breech and remove the back door to the apartment, Martinez said.
After tear gas was deployed into the apartment, the suspect was seen approaching the front door, holding a gun in one hand and the boy in the other.
Around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect walked out a back door toward his car with the baby and pointed a gun at police, Martinez said. A Gary police officer opened fire and the suspect was fatally shot. His name has not been released.
The boy was unharmed, Martinez said.
