SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – Authorities on Tuesday identified a man shot and killed by officers a day earlier in South San Francisco as 60-year-old Brian Joseph Montana.
Montana was identified in an update that included other details about the shooting in the 300 block of Arroyo Circle.
Officers were initially dispatched to the scene at 5:52 p.m. for a report of a person – later revealed to be Montana – brandishing a firearm at a neighbor, according to the South San Francisco Police Department. They arrived at the scene minutes later and immediately called for backup because Montana was shooting into an occupied home.
Police said Montana then moved to the driveway of the residence and hid behind parked vehicles.
Over the next 25 minutes, Montana fired a handgun, shotgun and rifle at officers from the driveway, according to police.
“Officers used police vehicles as cover from the barrage of gunfire and were able to return fire,” police said.
Montana was hit at least once and died of his injuries at the scene, according to police.
A resident of the home Montana fired into was injured during the incident. Police described the victim’s injuries as “non-life-threatening” but did not specify the cause.
No other injuries were reported.
Two officers fired their weapons, police said. Police did not identify the officers but said both have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary in such incidents.
Additional information, including audio and video recordings, is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
