Man released without charges after fatal fight at CTA Loop station

A person who was taken into police custody after allegedly fighting with another man who died on the platform at the CTA Clark/Lake station over the holiday weekend was released without being charged, Chicago police said Wednesday.

The investigation into the death of Robert Harper, which police were investigating as a homicide, remains open. There are no other persons of interest besides the man who was released, a police spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Harper, 56, was fighting with another man on a platform at the station about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he suffered a fatal head injury. The other man had been arrested but has since been released.

Harper, who was unhoused, according to his relatives, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by Chicago firefighters who found him unresponsive on the L platform.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said Harper died at the scene, and an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death was inconclusive, pending further studies.

Area 3 detectives are investigating.
